After another exhausting workweek, I was recently going through my mail. I’m used to receiving so many unsolicited offers from banks, so when I saw a letter from Tangerine, I assumed it was another special offer I wasn’t interested in, so I almost tossed it in the recycling without reading it. I’m glad I came to my senses and took the time to review the letter because as I soon discovered, it contained important information about changes to the Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card.

Household Debt Hits a New Record in the 4th Quarter of 2016

Another quarter has passed with household debt hitting a fresh record. Household debt hit a new record 167.3 percent of disposable income in the fourth quarter of 2016. That’s up from 166.8 percent in the previous quarter. In simple terms, that means on average for every dollar of disposable income Canadians earn, they owe $1.67 of debt.

A Win for the Little Guys: Small Businesses Negotiate Lower Interchange Fees with MasterCard

Credit card interchange fees have long been a thorn in the side of small businesses. The fees may be invisible to consumers, but they certainly aren’t to small businesses. The rise in popularity of premium credit cards means small businesses are forking over even more in interchange fees these days. This spells trouble for small businesses with razor thin margins, who have no choice, but to pass along some of the fees to consumers in the form of higher prices.

Will Air Miles Cardholders Come Back in 2017?

2016 was a rough year for Air Miles. The company found itself in the middle of a PR nightmare when it attempted to introduce an expiry policy that would see unredeemed points older than five years start to expire beginning in 2017. The company ended up doing an about-face, cancelling the controversial policy a couple months ago, but it seems that cardholders still haven’t forgiven the travel rewards program. (It probably doesn’t help that Air Miles recently devalued some of its rewards.)
