Experts recommend checking your Canadian credit report regularly for fraud and inaccuracies. It is also a good idea to check your report before taking out any type of loan, or getting a credit card. After all, your credit report is the document lenders look at to determine your creditworthiness, so it's a good idea to know what's on it.
Getting your Canadian credit report is free by mail, but will cost money if you request it electronically.
Your credit report, also called a Consumer Disclosure statement, can be requested by mail from TransUnion and Equifax – the two Canadian credit bureaus. Follow the steps below to get your free credit reports sent by post.
Step 1: Download the Equifax Request Form
Step 2: Equifax requires copies of 2 pieces of government issued identification such as a driver’s license, health card, birth certificate or passport. If neither piece of government issued identification shows your current home address, you must also submit a copy of an additional document that shows your address (such as a recent telephone or utilities bill, or a bank or credit card statement).
