Sounds like a great offer but what does “qualifying purchases” mean?
A qualifying purchase is simply any purchase you make with the card. However, I believe any refunded charges (such as returning a product) do not qualify. Basically you can’t just go buy 5 things and return them.
Does buying gas or groceries be a qualifying purchase?
Yes, any retail purchase will qualify including gas and groceries.
Do you have to contact MBNA after you make the 5 purchases to get your eReader sent, or is it automatic?
It is automatic. They will send you the Reader a few weeks after your 5th purchase.
This is BS, I applied and got the following message.

My preference is for a red reader. Is it possible to request a specific color? If so, how can the request be made?
I don’t think that there is a way to request.
No, unfortunately you can’t pick your color. The promotion is only for the Black reader.
