World travelers and point hoarders are rejoicing over the recent launch of two Canadian Delta SkyMiles reward cards. Until now, Canadians seeking SkyMiles credit card rewards had to earn them through American Express cards. Capital One is issuing the cards with the MasterCard brand. The SkyMiles cards come is two flavours; the World MasterCard and the Gold MasterCard.
The Delta SkyMiles World MasterCard is the premier offering, and comes with an annual fee of $120. To sweeten the deal, new cardholders will receive 25,000 bonus miles by simply using the card once. The interest rate is competitive with other reward cards. Additional benefits include emergency medical coverage, price protection, and concierge services. This card is best suited for frequent travelers or business use.
The Delta SkyMiles Gold MasterCard offers similar benefits, but does not carry an annual fee. The downside is the bonus points offer. You only receive 2,500 bonus points with the first purchase, which is far from the 25,000 minimum amount needed to redeem for a flight discount. We think that's a bit stingy, but this card could still be a good choice for those looking to start building up points for a special trip.
There's no doubt these new cards will be flagship offerings from Capital One Canada. However, it remains to be seen how Canadian residents respond to the offers. Which one will land in your wallet?
