Since you are in Canada with a non-immigrant visa, you will need to establish a credit profile before a bank will give you an unsecured credit card. Getting a secured card (putting up a deposit) may be a good way to establish credit.

Capital One offers secured cards specifically for people new to Canada. You might want to consider this card as you do your research: http://www.creditcardscanada.ca/review/guaranteed-mastercard-for-newcomers
