I get most of my credit cards online as I find it to be the fastest and easiest. It's also the best place to shop as you can compare cards and benefits quite easily. I know my parents will only go to a bank to get a credit card. But let's face it, they still don't trust the internet. I don't see any risk, as most sites are secure sites, and I have never had an issue in the past.
In terms of perks I can't really tell you for sure. It seems like getting a card at an airport (usually a travel card) will get you bonus miles. At a University a t-shirt. I think online gives you the same perks. I got the Alaskan Airline card and got 25,000 bonus miles on approval, and that's the same as what they are promoting at the airport. Not sure about the t-shirt, but then again who cares. Hope that helps!

I agree with John Boy. Online is by far the best and easiest for me. Not sure about fastest, but certainly faster than snail mail. And if you consider driving to a bank and getting upsold by a banker it may be the fastest. I think the biggest benefit is being able to compare cards side by side and checking out reviews. I think you can make an informed decision online and I haven't had any safety issues. For perks I think they are all the same, but I can't confirm that.
